Hi Chris
The fuselage is now completely covered. I am realy wondering how you want to realize the wing mount

Stefan, I will probably do something crude, as I did with the Habicht...
It usually works out OK:

Moving now to the cockpit canopy, first some of the frames are made up from laminations of .75mm CTP
The lower frames are made up from 12 x 6mm spruce. The right hand side one is already hinged up...

Salut Chris
As usual, superb work
Did you laminate carbon tows between the laminations of ply for the canopy frames?
As usual, I'm having trouble finding any.

Paul, I can't get any either, but it doesn't matter as it's not really necessary. I've been experimenting with these laminated pieces: 5-min epoxy gives a quick and strong job, but there's obviously not much working time. White glue left overnight is easy to use, but the piece is slightly more flexible, but still quite useable..

Still working on the canopies, but the job is nearly done...
Adding the .75mm CTP to the front canopy
The joins are reinforced with piano wire pegs
[img]
The lower frames for the rear canopy are shaped to the fuselage by clamping 2 laminations of 6 x 3mm spruce epoxied together
Now the job...
is nearly complete...

OK, for Stephan, it's time to look at the mounting of the wings
Here are the component parts of the wing joiner box...(The brass box-tubes cross over in the main box to allow for a greater depth of joiner blade)
The sides of the box are bolted together to allow the brass boxes to be inserted through the fuselage sides afterwards...
The box is now in the fuselage, but will not be permanently fixed until the wings are properly set up...

Now to set the angle of the wing root fairing...(I should have done this before the last post!) A wing profile blank has been cut out and a piece of 6 x 6mm spruce glued to the geometric chord line.
The fuselage has been set up so that the tailplane is at 1.5 degrees negative. Now the profile blank is set to zero with the spirit level and the position of the wing root fairing established...
The aerodynamics are:
HQ35/14 wing root, HQ35/13 at the gull join, and HQ35/12 at the tip.
The calage is 1.5 degrees

In the UK Ramin comes in 2.5m lengths, ideal for wing spars. However, the quality has become not so good in the past few years, and here is what happened to my Skylark 4 on it's 1st flight.
Now I use Spruce, which comes in 1.25m lengths and I now have to splice 2 pieces together to make the wing spars...

Ouch!
I have seen Ramin in Mr. Bricolage over here and the quality seems good.
J'ai vu le Ramin en France à Mr. Bricolage et je croix le qualité et bon.

I hope you are all having a good holiday. Time to move back to the workshop...!
Making up the wing root fairings...
Once on the fuselage, how do we make sure they are parallel to each other?
First I used the old method called the 'drop test'.
Then I used a much simpler method by making up a BIG pair of callipers
Now the fairing is lined with CTP and the rigging angle is checked by means of the incidence gauge

Hi Chris
An observation I often made with the Musger MG19 construction is the wrong angle how the wing root fairings are mounted with regard to the fuselage. If you have a look on a real MG19 you will realize that the angle stays exactly the same as the angle of the wing at that point. Thus if you want to be full-scale you might change it. That was the reason that I have changed the layout of the formers of my 1:4 MG19A construction as you can learn from this subject http://www.retroplane.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1742&start=0 or this picture
I Hope you understood what I want to say

Stephan, thank you for your comments... I guess it is all a matter of philosophy: I prefer to build many models with minimal scale detail, rather than a few that are scale perfect. I have used a model profile on my wings, (HQ) so already there is a deviation from scale. I usually work from whatever photographs I can find, and looking at this one, I'm not too worried about this detail difference... (When the model is completed, I will post a photo from the same angle

The owners of the original always search for pictures - an I too...
Here is one from Innsbruck - during summer the MG19 is stationed here...

Work commences now on the outer wing panels
Setting up for the joining of the spars. This is where vertically oriented spars are useful, as there is plenty of glueing area for the join...
Now the spars are ready to epoxy together...
Here the spar joint has been reinforced both sides with .75mm CTP...
Now it is starting to look like a proper glider

Pat, I have no use for Christmas trees...they prevent rigging indoors where it is warm!
I do not know how it will translate, but I have my epitaph already written...

The wings have been bottom-sheeted, now it is time for the most critical part...The wing is supported on 4 supports, shaped to the bottom of the wing,
and all set at a zero angle...
A straight piece of balsa strip is taped to the TE to keep it straight...
Another view of the wing supports...
Masking tape: it has a 1000 uses!

Time now to look at the ailerons... 1st, the shrouds must be made up from .75 CTP and 1.5 balsa
Now the shrouds are glued top and bottom to the wing...
The aileron is built in a similar fashion to the rudder...
