We had an eventful day, yesterday! After a long period of dull weather we had sun, so it was an excellent opportunity to do a fotoshoot. Raymond knew a nice location, so we started;
The building up takes a lot of time, I am thinking of improving that...
Wires all over the place....
And securing pins..
All those ribs...
Last wing slides on its place..
It had the nice transparancy where I was looking for
It was difficult to hold it!
Finally completed!
Because it was nice weather we decided to make some hand tosses.
Some problems became apparent.
First its difficult to get an hold on the fuselage?? so it was difficult to toss.

As you can see, it needed some improvement!
The rigging appeared to be to weak, a lot of wire was not good clamped
The strain on the wires is pretty high with the kind of "landings" I made .
I also have some doubts about the wing warping, I am lokking to improve that.
Ther was also some damage at the wooden parts, a bit on the root of the wing and the skid.
I'll make the next changes; replace the rigging with heavier wire (90 kg) and improve the clamping, also securing the clevices and testing if it is strong enough.
Looking if it is possible to enhance the warping. I have some doubts about the control off the rolling, horizontal tailplane gives ample control!
Repair the skid and wing. When that is OK the FG can be towed, it is good that this weak points of the plane are discovered with little damage.

Hooo, Vincent, you are crazy to do hand launch with this model at the field not enough speed to have good reactions, use a bungee or go to the slope or towing, please stop hand launch before destroy it

Yes, I am going to tow!! it and yes I am a bit crazy . Luckily the model appeared to be quite strong
We don't have something like a slope but you are right, no hand launches. (with the Nemere it went OK, that's why we tried it)

Ton Fokker est vraiment splendide et je suis soulagé de voir qu'il n'a pas subi de dégâts trop importants !
Je m'excuse par avance si je "pollue" un peu ton post, mais cette petite mésaventure m'inquiète quelque peu car à dire vrai, je pensais procéder un peu de la même façon le moment venu pour faire voler le Tenax... Et au vu des différentes réactions des pilotes expérimentés du forum, cela ne semble pas du tout raisonnable ! Pourtant, je ne suis vraiment pas très chaud pour le lancer directement dans la pente sans avoir pu effectuer auparavant quelques réglages. Alors je me permets de m'adresser à eux à travers ton post pour savoir comment ils procèdent pour le tout premier vol...
Bons futurs tests .

I am very glad there is little damage and in this way I learned about the weak spots of this plane! Fokker himself made also a lot of changes on this plane!
Sadly I could not do as Fokker on this picture
I knew the risks of hand launches, but there are also risks with towing or bungee.
I learned a lot of it, I'll make some changes in the wing warping and rigging and I have got the confidence now to tow it!

Ich mache solche Erstversuche immer mit Flitschengummi:
Erst nur mal rutschen lassen, dann immer etwas mehr vom Boden weg
steigen steigen lassen, so kann man sich drauf einstellen ohne zu viel Schaden zu verursachen (meist )

I just remember a Airco D.H.2 I had built. It was a really beautiful thing, unfortunately on the maiden flifght I had to find out that my wires were not tight enough, too... They got into the Propeller and the Propeller ripped out the controll wires from thre rudder... THAT was sad....

Sorry for your plane Christian its sad to see it happening.
Thanks all for your caring remarks!! I think the bungee thing is a very good option to make first flight attempts, it good to dose. Slopes and towing is a bit more frightening for me
Luckily there is not much damage and easy to repair. I never built a biplane with functional rigging, so I had a lot to learn. Specially the shockloads are so much higher with rigging because the whole thing is so stiff. I will replace the rigging and I already changed the servo arm of the wing warping to give greater travel, its now 7.5 degrees up and 7.5 degrees down.
Don't worry, it will be OK, at least I know its quite robust

Im anfang hatte Ich gedacht dass die Spannweite des Originals 12 meter war, 2.40m als Model. Spater habe Ich dan entdeckt dass das Original eine Spannweite von 11.20 hatte, im Model 2.22m.

Bonjour a tous,
The first thing I had to tackle was the rigging. I ordered wire for 90 kg, but it was to thick, not good for the looks . The insufficient clamping in the bushes with the 40 kg wire was the problem, the wire just slipped out. I think this was a mistake of mine. I am familiar with sailing and on sailing rigging the clamping is 100% free of slipping, so I just clamped the bushes. Now I learned to make an extra loop in the wire to get it slip free.
I replaced all the rigging, except for the rudder controls, because the loads are so much less.
Next was a new skid and I decided, (because its an vulnarable and essential part) to make a spare one.
laminating with thin CA, the thermos bottle is to keep the water for bending nice hot.
coloured with bister and merisier from "Liberon"
On top, bottom and sides I put glass roving with epoxy.
Connected with 3 M2 bolts to the fuselage
Finally I repaired the wing
So the Fokker is ready to fly again, we are going to tow it, hopefully coming weekend, the forecast is good and Rob is getting his Piper ready.

Concerning first flights I am working as follow:
On the slope, with some nice Wind, I am running with the glider in my hands and I am "feeling" the movement. Up or down? It give you already good informations.

Thanks a lot for your encouraging comments.
A slope is certainly a good place for a first flight. Regretfully, the only slope in our region has a very nasty landing terrain, very, very small, with barbed wire around it and a lots of turbulence, with a modern glider with brakes is still tricky.
So we are going to tow it, nice flat field and I have adapted some controls, less elevator and more wing warping, so I hope for the best.

I have had the honour of witnessing the first flights of the Fokker yesterday. It was beautiful!
I't up to Vincent to tell his story, but here are the pictures and movie:
The plane had a lot of attention.
